Attendees at Balmoral Show, perhaps more accustomed to cattle and sheep, got more than they bargained for when they encountered “Sid the Shark” at the StopLoanSharks NI exhibition stand!

The Consumer Council’s Illegal Money Lending and Financial Services Team were in attendance at the show all week, talking to the general public about the dangers of illegal money lending.

Many of those who stopped by the stand indicated that they were familiar, either directly or indirectly, with this issue but all voiced support for the aims of the campaign.

The team were also greatly encouraged by the support expressed for the campaign by other public bodies and charitable organisations exhibiting at the show.

Scott Kennerley, Director of Financial Services at The Consumer Council said, “As a relatively new team, we are still working hard to develop our outreach and education resources to enable us to get out and engage with local communities. Therefore, it is a great source of encouragement to receive such support both from the general public and from other organisations with connections to the debt and advisory sector.

The team has recently completed their public-facing website: The site provides more information on the campaign and its objectives as well as signposting practical help and guidance to those who find themselves in financial difficulty and, as a result, more vulnerable to rip-off illegal lenders.
